Brief Description of Research Areas

VT-ARC’s Wireless Systems and Research Development (WISARD) lab enables cross-cutting wireless 3GPP and Open RAN applied research, as well as complex, independent, third-party wireless testing and evaluation (T&E) campaigns, to accelerate the technology readiness levels of emerging technologies—advancing them from conceptual design to validated prototypes and pre-commercial products. Our current research focuses on Open RAN interoperability testing and validation, dynamic spectrum sharing and sensing, multi-operator RAN architectures, and 5G network security. We also lead applied research studies on advanced 5G/6G use cases, including non-terrestrial networks (NTN), augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), industrial IoT (IIoT), tactical radio systems, and mission-critical applications—bridging the gap between laboratory innovation and deployable solutions.
