In 2024, the Next G Alliance’s 6G National Roadmap Working Group (6G NRWG) launched a dedicated effort to explore the requirements and use cases of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) across simulation and real-world contexts. This Phase I report captures the team’s key findings.
The report reviews the current state of ISAC within global standards bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and examines several core dimensions:
- Use cases across industries
- Spectrum needs and regulatory considerations
- North American priorities for deployment
- Technical parameters, including sensing requirements, waveform
- design, and radar cross-section (RCS) modeling
- System-level challenges and link budget assessments
- Proofs of concept demonstrating practical feasibility
Overall, the report outlines the growing maturity of ISAC technology and its transformative potential for 6G systems, offering strategic guidance and highlighting opportunities for innovation across sectors.
